Ever get excited about a goal, share it on social media, and then lose interest or motivation to actually follow through?
Guilty ![]()
We’re often taught to shout our goals from the rooftops as a way of holding our feet to the fire, but that can actually be counterproductive.
When we get excited, feel good endorphins like dopamine get released. Typically the first thing we want to do is to share it with others and amplify it.
That usually works, and therein lies the problem!
Our brain doesn’t know the difference between what is real and what isn’t ![]()
So when you get all those positive comments, likes, and hearts, you feel great!
You get that surge of happy feel good chemicals coursing through you as though you accomplished the goal. This feels amazing – especially for those of us with ADHD!
But in reality, you haven’t taken any real steps toward your goal ![]()
Once the praise winds down, you are left with a false sense of accomplishment and reduced motivation. It then becomes harder to take action because the feel good chemicals that mobilized you have dissipated and you want to move onto something shiny and new.
So what should you do to keep those chemicals coming consistently?
Consider taking steps toward your goal in private.
Instead of posting about your goals in more public forums, try only telling a few close friends, loved ones, or a coach (I am available
) for support and accountability.
Why?
Because the secret to motivation and happiness is PROGRESS.
When you start taking steps in the direction of your goals, each step forward can release more endorphins.
Instead of one big burst of endorphins from a social media post, you feel good every time you move closer to your goal.
That creates the motivation you need to keep going ![]()
Are you ready to stop shooting yourself in the foot, end the cycle of false accomplishment, and start cultivating more motivation to help you achieve your goals? ![]()
